KUALA LUMPUR (19 January 2019): Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi saved the day for Malaysia when they became the nation’s sole representatives on the final day of the Perodua Malaysia Masters 2019 (PMM 2019) when they overcame Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik in an all Malaysian semi-final at the Axiata Arena, KL Sports City (KLSC), Bukit Jalil today. Yew Sin-Ee Yi, who are ranked 27 in the world upset their higher ranking team mates, Aaron-Soh who are four rungs above them, 21-16, 18-21, 21-19 in 44 minutes.
“I feel that both pairs played below their true capabilities today. The winner is the one who is the most consistent because both pairs made a lot of errors,” said Yew Sin after the match.
It will be Yew Sin-Ee Yi’s first Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Tour Super 500 with their previous finale appearance so far at the Grand Prix Gold, New Zealand Open in 2017.
Making the final is one thing, but winning it is another as they will face the daunting task of upsetting world number one, Marcus Fernaldi Gideon-Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo.
“We have to bounce back for tomorrow’s match because it is not easy to beat Marcus Fernaldi-Kevin Sanjaya. We have to think up of a new strategy for tomorrow,” added Yew Sin.
The Asian Games gold medallist, denied the home crowd of witnessing of an all Malaysian final when they halted the progress of professional pair, Goh V Shem- Tan Wee Kiong, 21-18, 24-22 in the other semi-final.
Malaysia began the day looking to place a representative in the finals of four categories – men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles – but in the end had to settle for one.
National women’s number one, Goh Jin Wei was halted in her tracks when she lost, 16-21 16-21 to defending champion from Thailand, Ratchanok Intanon.
Professional men’s singles, Liew Daren didn’t even get his day on court as he succumbed to an injury to his left foot during yesterday’s match against Shi Yuqi, forcing him to withdraw from his match up with Son Wan Ho from Korea.
Professional mixed doubles doubles pair, Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying was also shown the exit after going the distance, losing 15-21 21-7 14-21 to the third ranked pair in the world, Yuta Watanabe- Arisa Higashino from Japan.
The PMM 2019 will reach it’s finale tomorrow with tickets available through online at https://myticket.asia/ or at the counter on match day at the Axiata Arena, KL Sports City (KLSC).
Tickets can be purchased from RM40 to RM75 according to seating (upper, lower and premium) for the final matches. Children from between four years and 18 years can enjoy discounts for Upper Tier.
