January 17, 2019KUALA LUMPUR (17 January 2019): Heir to the throne, Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie have the chance to stake their claim as the numero uno mixed doubles pair in the country when they take on Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying in the quarter finals of the Perodua Malaysia Masters 2019 (PMM 2019) held at the Axiata Arena, KL Sports City, Bukit Jalil today.Fifth seeds, Soon Huat-Shevon Lai, booked their place in the last eight when they defeated Japanese pair, Takuro Hoki-Wakana Nagahara, 21-13-21-19 in 32 minutes.
Meanwhile, third seeds, Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying went through after overcoming Chinese combination, Lu Kai-Chen Lu after a battling display, 17-21, 21-17, 21-15 in 58 minutes.
Ranked 11 in the world, Soon Huat-Shevon Lai are now the top mixed doubles pair in the Badminton Association of Malaysia’s stable after Peng Soon-Liu Ying, sixth in the world opted to leave the national body to strike out on their own in the new year.
“Our target for this year is to become the number one pair in the country and also to qualify for the Olympics,” said Shevon.
“Facing Peng Soon-Liu Ying, we might be rivals on court but we are good friends of it and we share many things between us. We know about their game and they too know about game.
“There will be a bit of pressure as both of us wants to win. If anything, we have a coach that can help,” added the 25 year old.
A win for either pair would guarantee hosts, Malaysia a place in the last four to be held this Saturday. Soon Huat-Shevon Lai will be looking to go beyond that in a bid to improve their 3/4th placing last time around.
In the morning rounds, rookie pair, Vivian Hoo-Yap Cheng Wen’s in the PMM 2019 ended in the second round after they lost to Indonesian pair, Yulfira Barkah-Jauza Fadhila Sugiarto, 21-9, 21-18.
