Dream Start for BU Dragons BC

December 22, 2016KUALA LUMPUR (22 December, 2016): BU Dragons BC condemned Muar BC to back-to-back defeats after beating the Johor side 11-7 in their SS Purple League (SSPL) 2016/17 match earlier today at Gem in Mall, Cyberjaya.
Despite beating two of the stronger teams (Puchong United BC and Petaling BC) in their first two games of the SSPL 2016/17 season, the daunting task of facing Muar did not seem to flatter BU Dragons at all.
But it was Muar who wasted no time in collecting their first three points thanks to Zulfadli Zulkiffli 3-1 (11-5, 11-4, 9-11, 3-2) win over BU Dragons’ Chan Yan Kit in the first match of the tie.
However they were pegged back after BU Dragons’ Goh Jin Wei’s convincing performance against Muar’s Sonia Cheah, who is 6 years her senior. The national junior player won the women’s singles match 3-1 (11-8, 7-11, 11-8, 9-6).
With the tie very much in the balance, Tan Wee Kiong and Chooi Kah Ming gave BU Dragons the lead as they dominated their men’s doubles match against Muar’s Hoon Thien How and Tan Boon Heong 3-0 (11-7, 11-8, 11-8). The latter pair never got going as Wee Kiong and Kah Ming ran out comfortable winners.
BU Dragons then sealed their third win of the season in the mixed doubles match. Their pair of Goh Soon Huat and Lai Pei Jing beat Muar’s Chan Peng Soon and Lee Meng Yean 3-1 (11-7, 6-11, 11-3, 8-5).
Korean superstar, Lee Hyun Il secured some consolation points for Muar after defeating BU Dragon’s Hong Kong import, Wei Nan 2-1 (11-6, 7-11, 10-9) in the second men’s singles match.
“Overall I am satisfied with our performances today. We gave our first men’s singles, Chan Yan Kit a run-out as this is his first appearance. He will have to get used to the SSPL format. And we all know Hyun Il is a good player but our player, Wei Nan did give him a run for his money,” said BU Dragons’ head coach, Tan Bin Shen.
“I thought it will be a close match in the men’s and mixed doubles match. But in the end I wasn’t to be. I think it is down to the preparation of the players. Wee Kiong looked fresh and was well-prepared while Kah Ming looked more confident in his plays. The other plus point is that this is not the first time Lai Pei Jing is playing in a 11-points system match so she is used to it,” added Bin Shen.
Yesterday, SSPL 2016/17 debutants, Klang City BC recorded their first win of the season by overcoming Bangsar Hawks BC 11-7 at Gem In Mall, Cyberjaya. As the only all local team in the league, Klang City can gain some confidence and build on that morale-boosting win in the coming weeks to finish strong.
