April 28, 2013KUALA LUMPUR (27 APRIL 2013): Academy Soccerkids-MBSA and Ombak FC grabbed the honours in the Liga 1MCC-Hong Leong Yamaha Under-12 Klang Valley zone after clinching the Division One and Two titles respectively at the Petaling Jaya Stadium on Saturday.
Academy Soccerkids-MBSA stunned defending champions CIMB-Youth Football Academy Bintang Muda 1-0 with a well executed 20-metre left-footed shot from Abdul Raziq Abdul Rahim in extra time which brought about wild celebrations from the players, team officials and their estimated 200 fans.
The champions walked away with the winning purse of RM6,000 and a trophy while CIMB-YFA Bintang Muda settled for RM3,500.
In the Division Two final, Ombak FC defeated Gen Pro 1-0 to pocket the winner’s purse of RM4,000 and a trophy while Gen Pro took home RM2,000. Both teams have earned promotion to Division One for the 2014 season.
Raziq’s goal – his 21st in the Liga 1MCC-Hong Leong Yamaha, means it was game over for CIMB-YFA Bintang Muda, who had harboured hopes of a back-to-back triumph after 50 pulsating minutes of near-misses against a side that was so determined to turn the tables on the favourites. While it was a heartbreaking moment for CIMB-YFA Bintang Muda, the victory lifted Academy Soccerkids-MBSA’s confidence to a new height as they embark on another journey – the Liga 1MCC-Hong Leong Yamaha Under-14 – which starts on May 11.
Parading a line-up that includes goalkeeper Nurul Azurin Mazlan, the only female player in the male-dominated Liga 1MCC-Hong Leong Yamaha, Academy Soccerkids-MBSA staved off a strong challenge from CIMB-YFA Bintang Muda who pressed on for early goals. But it was the scintillating performance from Nurul, who has been shortlisted into the ‘2020 Project Squad’ for the National women’s team, and the perseverance of Abdul Raziq, that won Academy Soccerkids-MBSA the accolades.
The prizes were presented by 1MCC chairman Dato’ Chan Tien Ghee, 1MCC Ambassador Dato’ K. Rajagobal, Hong Leong-Yamaha Motor Sdn Bhd Managing Director C.H.Ng, Hong Leong Yamaha Sdn Bhd General Manager for sales and marketing, Voon Yin Kong, Astro Assistant Vice-President for sports business, Will Yong, and Astro’s Senior Assistant Vice-President corporate responsibility and community affairs, Jolyn Gasper.
Wan Amirul Izzat’s 24th minute strike was good enough for debutants Ombak FC to seal the Division Two crown in a thrilling encounter which could have gone either way had Gen Pro strikers taken the many chances that came their way.
The Year Five student of SK Selayang Jaya, stabbed the ball past goalkeeper Khairul Fahmi in a goalmouth melee, leaving Gen Pro players and their vociferous fans in a state of shock as he went about celebrating his 11th goal in the league.
“I am ecstatic with this victory. This is the first time we are competing in the Under-12 league,” said Ombak FC head coach Mohd Zahrill. “From the very beginning it was a 50-50 battle all the way. In all fairness, Gen Pro dominated the final but we rode on luck and our team spirit was extremely high as we topped the table standings in the preliminary round of the league.”
