March 26, 2019KUALA LUMPUR (25 March 2019): National mixed doubles pair, Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Jemie Lai are eager to continue their encouraging performances this year when the Celcom Axiata Malaysia Open 2019 opens its doors at Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil from 2-7 April.
Showcasing a more consistent gameplay since the start of the year, Soon Huat-Shevon reached the All England semi-finals which showed evident signs of them reaching their peak as a pair.
Their achievements this year also includes advancing to the quarterfinals of the Malaysia Masters and Indonesia Masters respectively in January as well as a semi-finals appearance in the German Open followed by the semis of the All England which can be upheld as their best accomplishment since they were paired together.
“We are now focussing for our next task ahead which is the Malaysia Open. Preparations have been going well and our improved chemistry on court was evident during the All England,” said Goh Soon Huat when met after a training session at the Malaysia Badminton Academy.
“Following our performance there (All England) and climbing the recent World rankings, it definitely acts as a huge confidence booster for us,” added Soon Huat who is currently ranked World No.9 with his pair, Shevon.
Soon Huat also hopes that his fine form alongside Shevon will carry on in front of the home crowd throughout the upcoming Malaysia Open.
He said, “So far, we have been playing well this year and I hope we can continue improving and giving our best in the Malaysia Open as well as the other tournaments we will be participating in.”
“Our initial target for each tournament is always to reach the quarters and it is the same for the Malaysia Open. In the first round, we are drawn to face an Indonesian pair (Alfian Eko Prasetya-Marsheilla Gischa Islami) which we have not played before. This makes it difficult to predict the outcome but we will definitely give our best when we face them,” explained Soon Huat.
The Celcom Axiata Malaysia Open 2019, which is part of the 2019 HSBC BWF World Tour, is slated for April 2-7, 2019 at the Axiata Arena, Kuala Lumpur Sports City (KLSC) and offers total prize money of US$700,000 for the winners of the respective categories.
