KUALA LUMPUR (6 February 2018): A total of 24 rugby teams will vie for the prestigious NJ Ryan Trophy as the Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK) Premier 7s 2018 kicks off from 23 till 25 February at Kuala Kangsar, Perak.
Since its first inception in 2011, the tournament has witnessed the appearance of top teams from the states nationwide namely hosts MCKK, Johor’s Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sports School (SSTMI) and Australia International School from Singapore.
Title holders, SSTMI will look to defend the crown and add to their accolades (2011, 2012, 2016 and 2017 champions) as they go up against 2013 champion MCKK, 21 other respective State champions and 1 foreign entry.
The 8th edition of the MCKK Premier 7s Rugby tournament is under the patronage of the Sultan of Perak, DYMM Paduka Seri Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah Al- Maghfurlah.
In conjunction with this year’s SUKMA games in Perak, the tournament organized by MCKK through The Malay College Old Boys’ Association (MCOBA) is endorsed by the Perak Youth, Sports & Human Resources Department and the Perak Tourism Department.
The MCKK Premier 7s is part of the National Rugby Development Programme (PPRK) as a podium for young players to showcase their talents and form a formidable team that will one day represent the country at the international stage.
“The objective of organizing the MCKK Premier 7s is to encourage the revival of rugby among participating schools and to assist in the development of the sport locally. This tournament will provide an important platform in helping to develop the level of the sport in this country,” said YM Tunku Dato’ Ahmad Burhanuddin, President of MCOBA.
“This tournament will also be able to cultivate national interest as it involves the top rugby schools from every state in Malaysia. Australian International School making a return this season will provide added excitement in the tournament,” he said.
YM Tunku Dato’ Ahmad Burhanuddin added that it is never an easy task to organize a tournament and truly appreciates the overwhelming support from the Government of Malaysia, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Ministry of Tourism and Culture and also title sponsor, unifi, by Telekom Malaysia.
Tunku Dato’ Ahmad Burhanuddin also expressed his sincere gratitude to all the other sponsors and partners for their continuous support in ensuring the tournament runs smoothly while also wishing the best and a successful tournament for all participating teams.
