LUCK OF THE DRAW FOR MALAYSIA
August 28, 2013Myanmar promise golden touch
September 7, 2013PENANG (27 August 2013): The endurance of cyclists will be put to severe test on September 8 when the fifth edition of the ‘Red Bull-Campaign For A Lane’ (CFAL5) gets underway at the Penang Esplanade.
The gruelling 82km energy-sapping ride embracing the ‘Pearl Island’ has attracted 3,200 participants, making it the largest ever cycling event held in the state in an awareness campaign to promote safe lanes for cyclists.
A larger section of participants in the CFAL5 are from several states while also attracting a sizable number of cyclists from neighbouring Southeast Asia nations.
Red Bull Malaysia Executive Director, Jyn Wee, said the overwhelming response from participants has given us the ‘extra dynamic push’ to ensure its success, just as in line with Red Bull’s motto of raising the bar in every sporting event. However, due to the bigger number of entries, this year’s registration was closed one month before the dateline.
“Red Bull is excited with CFAL5 as it is a big challenge to the 3,200 cyclists. Being a campaign for safe cycling, it also drains away the energy in such a challenging event with uphill rides,” said Wee at a press conference in Penang today.
Also in attendance at the event were G-Club Penang Cyclists chairman Dr Lim Seh Guan, and Ricky Ch’ng, Charter Member of Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah.
“Being an energy drink, Red Bull plays an important role in enhancing mental performance and physical endurance in an energy absorbing activity. Cycling is also a physical form of activity that builds character and discipline and we are certainly proud to be involved in the development of cycling in the country,” added Wee.
Organised by G-Club Penang Cyclists and Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah, cyclists in the CFAL5 will face daunting hill climbs at Teluk Kumbar, and another just after Balik Pulau, before heading towards Batu Ferringhi.
The Chief Minister of Penang, Lim Guan Eng, is expected to grace the event, and there are also plans to have him ride alongside the participants just as in previous CFAL5 events.
Red Bull has been actively energising Malaysians and involved in other sporting fields on a large scale such as Red Bull Monkey Run, Red Bull Rookies, Red Bull Futsal 5, and of recent the Red Bull Futsal Tri-Nations Cup 2013.
