April 10, 2012KUALA LUMPUR (8 APRIL 2012): Malaysia’s sports loving Prime Minister Datuk Sri Najib Tun Abdul Razak, who is also the country’s number one sports fan, launched the Liga 1Malaysia Cardiff City 2012 (Liga 1MCC 2012) today.
Three age groups will participate in this League, namely the Under 12s, Under 14s and Under 16s. The League started in March and will end in December 2012. More than 88 teams with a total of more than 2200 players are signed to participate in this year’s Liga 1MCC 2012. The League which is being played every Saturday and Sunday from 8 am to 4 pm, has attracted teams from the Klang Valley, Perak and Penang.
The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has sanctioned Liga 1MCC 2012. This year the title sponsors for Liga 1MCC 2012 is Hong Leong Yamaha Motors, Astro as official broadcast partner with HOLCIM as the co-sponsor.
In collaboration with the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), Youth and Sports Ministry, National Sports Council (NSC), 1MCC has taken the initiative in providing youths the opportunity to play football in a safe, organised and structured environment.
Dato’ Chan Tien Ghee, the Chairman of 1MCC spoke of his objective to provide a platform, at grassroot level, for youths to realise their highest individual potential through football, and at the same time inculcating good habits – discipline, commitment, responsibility, fair play, sportsmanship, loyalty and a healthy lifestyle. ‘This league is part of an all-inclusive programme, catering to ALL youths in the community. Youths from differing social, economic, racial and ethnic backgrounds are taking part in this league – this embodies the principles of 1 Malaysia.’ Dato’ Chan added.
Recently 1MCC conducted a Football Festival for 33 schools at the Stadium Astaka in Sitiawan. In the pipeline are more football-related activities aimed at reaching out to the youths as well as young adults throughout Malaysia. Currently, 1MCC conducts ‘Education Through Football’ programmes in the FELDA communities which are very well-received. ‘We will continue to reach out to the communities – Football For All – that is our aim.’ said Dato’ Chan, who is also Chairman of Cardiff City Football Club.
At the launch at the Rubber Research Institute in Sungei Buluh, coaches from Cardiff City Football Club were conducting mini coaching sessions and having a kick-around with the players. The Liga 1MCC 2012 Under 12s was being played on 2 pitches, while the Senior Football League and the Pesta Bolasepak for Under 10s were underway on another 2 fields. More than 7000 people comprising players, coaches, match officials, sponsors and families were there to join in the fun.
Also present at the launch were Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek, 1MCC Chairman Dato’ Chan Tien Ghee, FAM Vice-President Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal, National Coach Datuk K. Rajagobal, Group Managing Director Hong Leong Industries Bhd Datuk Yau Kok Seng, CEO Astro Malaysia Holdings Sdn Bhd Datuk Rohana Rozhan, Holcim Malaysia CEO Mr Mahanama Ralapanawa, 1MCC CEO, Datin Vivienne Leong together with current and ex-national players.
At the same function mocks were also presented by Hong Leong Yamaha Motors as title sponsors, Astro as official broadcaster and Holcim Malaysia as co-sponsors.
Earlier this year 1MCC set up a social media platform to reach out to youths via its grassroots football programmes and other activities. Dato’ Chan said, ‘We believe this is the way forward, the youth of today embraces modern technology. In order for us to be constantly in touch with them, we need to be in sync with them. Our social media platform, with our dedicated YouTube channel, Facebook and Twitter will help us connect with the youth and the communities.’
