Marcus Fernaldi-Kevin Sanjaya show why they are numero uno
KUALA LUMPUR (20 January 2019): National men’s doubles, Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi fought valiantly but found world number one, Marcus Fernaldi Gideon-Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo too hot to handle in the men’s doubles final of the Perodua Malaysia Masters 2019 (PMM 2019) at the Axiata Arena, KL Sports City (KLSC), Bukit Jalil today. Yew Sin-Ee, ranked 27th in the world were certainly not overawed by the occasion and buoyed by the home crowd, looked to find chinks in the Indonesian’s pair’s armoury.
But making the final is one thing, overcoming the juggernaut of Marcus-Kevin is another as the Asian Games champion showed why they are the top pair in the world with a demonstration of skills and finesse, catching the young Malaysian pair flat footed at times.
“Our game today, is not a reflection of our true capabilities, we know that they are more experienced and have better quality compared than us,” said Ee Yi.
“We can use this performance to further improve in the future,” he added.
Nevertheless, Yew Sin-Ee Yi, will look back at the tournament fondly in years after reaching their maiden Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Tour Super 500 final and in the process pocketing their biggest pay cheque in their careers so far, US$13,300 for finishing as runners up.
“Our confidence has improved after this. Now that this tournament has ended, we will be shifting our focus on the Indonesian Masters,” said Yew Sin.
Champions, Marcus Fernaldi-Kevin Sanjaya went home US$27,650 richer, bagging their first title of the 2019 season.
In the other deciding matches, Olympic champion, Chen Long was denied his first Malaysian Masters title by Son Wan Ho by Korea.
Fourth seed, Wan Ho played the game of his life to upset the third seed from China, 21-17, 21-19 for his maiden crown.
Defending champion, Ratchanok Intanon made it back to back victories after overcoming world champion, Carolina Marin from Spain, 21-9, 22-20.
Yuki Fukushima-Sayaka Hirota and Yuta Watanabe-Arisa Higashino made it a day to remember for Japan, bagging the women’s doubles and mixed doubles titles respectively.
World number one, Fukushima-Hirota went the distance before overcoming a spirited challenge from Greysia Polli-Apriyani Rahayu, ranked fourth in the world, 18-21, 21-16, 21-16.
Watanabe-Higashino then followed up with a smashing win over Thailand’s, Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Sapsiree Taerattanachai, 21-18, 21-18.
