September 18, 2016KUALA LUMPUR (18 Sept, 2016): Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sports School (SSTMI) emerged champions of the TNBMHL 2016 Women’s League.
The Bandar Penawar-based sports school in Johor defeated PKS-Uniten-KPT 4-3 in their last league match on Saturday to top the table standings on 18 points – four clear off Blue Warriors (Royal Malaysian Police) and seven points ahead of third-place ATM Pernama.
SSTMI also pocketed RM20,000 as league champions and Blue Warriors took home RM10,000 while ATM Pernama bagged RM5,000. PKS-Uniten-KPT finished in fourth position (9 points) while Politeknik Malaysia is at the bottom of the five-team league having lost all eight home and away matches.
In another match played on Saturday, Blue Warriors defeated Politeknik Malaysia 3-1 at the Bukit Serindit Hockey Stadium in Malacca.
Norhidayah Ahmad Bokhari opened scoring for SSTMI in the second minute via a penalty corner and Nur Syuhada Suhaimi added the second in the 27th minute from a field goal before PKS-Uniten-KPT pulled one back through Noorhayani Sirkam three minutes before the end of the second quarter.
SSTMI went ahead 3-1 in the 39th minute as Norhidayah scored her second goal but PKS-Uniten-KPT closed the gap at 3-2 through Nurul Nabihah with a minute remaining before end of the third quarter and drew level 3-3 in the 52nd minute from a Nurliyana Mohd Kip penalty corner.
However, SSTMI continued the push for the winning goal and were rewarded in the 59th minute as Fatin Syafiqah Mohd Sukri sneaked through a meekly shot to win the title.
The top four teams – SSTMI, Blue Warriors, ATM Pernama and PKS-Uniten-KPT qualified for the two-leg semifinals for the Vivian Soars Cup on 21 September and 23 September. The final will be held on Sept 25 at the Tun Razak Hockey Stadium (4pm).
The draw for the Vivian Soars Cup will be held on Monday (19 Sept) at the Malaysian Hockey Confederation office at 4pm. The champions will receive RM20,000 and runner-up RM10,000.
