March 28, 2023KUALA LUMPUR (9 MARCH 2023): Royal Selangor and Axle Sports have renewed their partnership for eRacing GP, and the first season is introducing young simulator racers from all over the world to four of Malaysia’s best-known circuits.
The virtual competition, Global Edition 11: Malaysian Playground, kicked off on 24 February at the Sepang International Circuit and saw the participation of over 90 sim racers from Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Hong Kong, Brunei, Australia, India, the United Kingdom and the Philippines in four classes.
Round 2, scheduled for 10 March, will see them competing on the Shah Alam Circuit, known fondly to Malaysians as the Batu Tiga Speedway Circuit, which was once the home of Malaysian motor racing. The 3.5-km long circuit was located close to the heart of Kuala Lumpur and hosted all kinds of races from superbikes to touring cars, even the legendary Group C race cars in the 1980s. It was sadly demolished in 2003 to make way for a suburban housing project.
“Our competitors have raced on virtual tracks around the world but this year, as a company with roots in Malaysia, we wanted to introduce young people to what was once some of the best racing in our country. Our hope is that we see a lot of drivers from all ages appreciate what has gone before.” said Alex Yoong, Founder and CEO of Axle Sports.
The remaining tracks will be revealed just before the last two rounds to maintain the element of surprise as Global Edition has done in previous seasons. Axle Sports hints that one track could date back over 80 years to the venue of Malaysia’s first-ever Grand Prix race.
“We are incredibly proud to be a part of this initiative that educates, nurtures and provides a supportive platform for young talent. We wish all the racers the best of luck!” expressed Yong Yoon Li, the Managing Director of Royal Selangor.
Global Edition 11: Malaysian Playground sees the virtual competition moving from RaceRoom Racing Experience to the Assetto Corsa Competizione racing platform. Round 2 and 3 will take place on 10 and 24 March with the grand final scheduled for 7 April. Participants in the Gold and Silver classes will compete in the Jordan 191 and those in the Bronze and Copper classes will race in the Taatus FA010.
Royal Selangor have also partnered with Axle Sports in the Endurance Edition which will see teams competing on some of the world’s most popular tracks come 1 April in races that range from 4 to 8 hour challenges.
eRacing GP winners in all categories will receive custom-made trophies sponsored by Royal Selangor. This is the fourth year of the partnership.
