BUKIT JALIL (4 April 2019): Mixed doubles pair Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing battled back from a game down to beat India’s Pranaav Jerry Chopra-Reddy N Sikki and book their spot in the quarter-finals of the Celcom Axiata Malaysia Open 2019 at the Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil today.
Malaysia’s fourth-ranked pair lost the first game 15-21 but stormed back to win the next two sets 21-17, 21-13 and set up a last eight meeting with Indonesia’s Tontowi Ahmad-Winny Oktavina Kandow tomorrow.
A much relieved Pei Jing said: “I think for today’s match I did not play well but luckily my partner Kian Meng managed to help out and we regained our rhythm to win the second and third games.
“Even though we lost the first game we didn’t lose hope and focused on giving our best until we finally achieved victory.”
Kian Meng added: “I wanted to really win this game and it was our determination that kept us going. I can’t say it was our best performance but nonetheless our game is improving. We hope to continue with our good performance tomorrow.”
They will be joined in the the last eight by professional pair and fifth seeds Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying who face an uphill task against China’s second seeds and last year’s runners-up Wang Yilyu-Huang Dongping.
Malaysia should have had three representatives in the quarter-finals but Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie were forced to withdraw when Soon Huat complained of dizziness following this morning’s session.
Commenting on the pair’s withdrawal, Badminton Association of Malaysia coaching director Wong Choong Hann confirmed that Soon Huat had complained of dizziness.
“After getting the doctor’s advice, he was advised to withdraw and rest. Nevertheless his condition is not serious as it is not related to his previous health condition,” added Choong Hann.
National women’s singles Goh Jin Wei failed to repeat her heroics in Bukit Jalil this time around going down to Pornpawee Chochuwong of Thailand, 16-21, 21-12, 10-21 in their second round encounter.
In her previous outing at the Axiata Arena, two-time world junior champion Jin Wei reached the semi-finals before bowing out to eventual champion and experienced Thai player Ratchanok Intanon at the Perodua Malaysia Masters in January.
Celcom Axiata Terbuka Malaysia 2019 will taper off on 7th April 2019 at the Axiata Arena, Kuala Lumpur Sports City (KLSC). Total prize money on offer is AS$ 700,000.
