TCBC breathe new life into their SSPL 2018/19 campaign

CYBERJAYA (11 January 2019): Serdang Badminton Club (Serdang BC) reignited their hopes for a place in the final rounds in Genting with a thumping 12-4 win over Bandar Maharani Badminton Club (BMBC) in Group A on Day 1, Stage 2 of the SS Purple League 2018/19 at Gem In Mall, Cyberjaya today.With this win, Serdang BC have a stranglehold on sixth place, with the teams that finished in 3rd to sixth place after the end of the Stage 2 qualifying for the final rounds to be held on 24-27 Jan 2019 at the Arena of Stars, Resorts World Genting.
Serdang BC have one more match to play in Group A, against Petaling BC on Sunday, with points from the previous seven matches in Stage 1 taken into account to form the final standings after the end of Stage 2.
Coach, Ong Ewe Hock will be hoping his charges can repeat the trick against Petaling BC, which saw them shock the dark horses 12-10 helped by a shock 3-2 win by national junior, Ng Tze Yong over experienced shuttler, Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin in the final men’s singles.
“I will put Ng Tze Yong again in the match against Iskandar. This will be a true test for him.
“If you win the first time, people will say it is a fluke, but if you win two or three times, that is a true measure of your capabilities,” added Ewe Hock, a former national shuttler.
BMBC continue their winless run with their eighth loss so far in the campaign, continuing their poor form from Stage 1 where they finished bottom.
Having finished in sixth after the end of Stage 1, Serdang BC looked odds on favourites in this tie and it showed from the opening men’s singles.
Malaysia’s rising star, Muhd Shaqeem Eiman Shahyar drew first blood when he won easily, 3-1 (11-7, 11-7, 4-11, 11-10) against compatriot, Ooi Jhy Dar.
Up and coming Indonesian shuttler, Alessandra Mainaky Lyanny then fired on all cylinders to extend Serdang BC’s lead to 6-1, thumping Malaysia’s Yap Rui Chen, 3-0 (11-8, 11-4, 11-4) in the women’s singles.
Mohd Razlan Shah Mohd Ridzuan Shah-Yap Roy King spoilt the party for Serdang BC when they won 3-0 (11-8, 11-10, 11-4) over local compatriots, Ong Wei Khoon-Choo Kai Qing in the men’s doubles for BMBC’s sole victory in the tie.
It was business as usual for Serdang BC as Malaysian-Chinese mixed doubles pair, Liu Lin-Yap Qar Siong thrilled the crowds with an exciting display to win 3-0 (11-8, 11-7, 11-9) over local pair, Lee Zhi Qing-Wong Tien Ci for an unassailable 9-4 lead.
Final men’s singles, Ziyi Teh need not have to lift a racket as his opponent, Lim Chong King from BMBC conceded a walkover to put a gloss over a fantastic performance, 12-4 to Serdang BC.
The SS Purple League 2019 features local and international players including Olympic medallists, world champions, former big names and rising stars on the international stage.
Players from the eight teams will compete in three stages in a single round robin format and play-off format for the coveted SS Purple League trophy. Total prize money for this season is RM1,500,000.
The SS Purple League 2019 will run from December 2018 to January 2019 beginning with Stage 1 on 21-24 Dec, 26-30 Dec and 2-6 Jan 2019 to be held at Gem in Mall, Cyberjaya. Stage 2 will be played on 11-13 Jan 2019, also at Gem in Mall, Cyberjaya. The final round will be held on 24-27 Jan 2019 at the Arena of Stars, Resorts World Genting.
