A Big Hit With Young Footballers In Kedah

Jitra, 18 September 2018 – Over 500 young footballers gained more than just footballing experience during the first installment of the ‘Eat Right to Play Right’ (ERTPR) Youth Cup 2018 held at the Industrial Training Institute of Jitra (ILP Jitra) in Kedah. The inaugural state tournament was organised by Zurich Malaysia, in line with the new initiatives under its ERTPR integrated community programme.

The weekend of 15 and 16 September saw 40 teams across the northern region of Kedah, Penang and Perlis competing in four (4) age categories; namely U8, U10, U12 and U14. The tournament not only provided a platform for the young talents to showcase their skills but also offered a variety of fun games and activities to educate them on proper nutrition practices and healthy lifestyle habits.

Muhd Akmal Farhan, who led his team, Kenari Kid Jitra to victory in the U14 category expressed his happiness towards the unique tournament concept, which emphasises on proper nutrition and dietary habits. The SMK Jitra student said, “This is the first time that I have participated in a tournament where I can learn how to improve my health and lifestyle by eating the right types of food and the right portion sizes. It is important for young players like us to eat well as it is vital for our progress and growth towards becoming athletes in the future.”

Another contented footballer is pint-sized player with a huge talent, Mohd Rosaidi Bin Nazri from the Sungai Petani based SBI FC which clinched the U12 category. “I am glad I could learn more about proper eating habits that will help me grow up stronger so that I can achieve my ambition of becoming a professional footballer one day,” said Mohd Rosaidi.

In the U14 category, Kenari Kid Jitra beat SMK Kulim 1-0 in the final whereas SBI FC claimed the U12 crown by overcoming Kenari Kid Jitra B 2-0. Under the junior categories, SK Penghulu Abu Bakar topped the U10 category after a convincing 5-0 win over Kenari Kid Gunung while AT Kangar finished as champion of the U8 category with a 1-0 over Kenari Kid Jitra.

Winners of each category walked away with a trophy, medals and cash prize. They will move on to compete in the Grand Finals that will be held in the Klang Valley. Also present to cheer on the players and give away the prizes was Mohd Shahrul Nizam bin Hanafi, the Northern Region Head of Zurich Takaful Malaysia Berhad.

Over the next two months, the ERTPR Youth Cup 2018 State Preliminaries will be held at Malacca, Pahang, Sarawak and Klang Valley; leading up towards the Grand Finals in December.

ERTPR is Zurich Malaysia’s integrated community programme that was established in 2016 in partnership with local non-governmental organisation, One Goal Malaysia (OGM) to tackle child malnutrition issues by educating children on the importance of nutrition and healthy eating, as well as to encourage physical activity and good sportsmanship, by using grassroots football as a platform. It is funded by a local grant from Z Zurich Foundation.
