Kuala Lumpur (25 Sept, 2016): Royal Malaysian Police Blue Warriors produced a scintillating first half performance against Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sports School (SSTMI) to lift the inaugural TNBMHL 2016 Vivian May Soars Cup at the Tun Razak Stadium today.
The Cops emerged 2-1 winners’ in the final thanks largely to field goals from Aida Fazriniza Zakaria, who unleashed a powerful shot past national goalkeeper Mas Huzaimah Md Aziz in the 19th minute and Hanis Nadiah Onn made it 2-0 just ten minutes later following a cleverly orchestrated one-two move with Angela Kais in the penalty area.
SSTMI, who are the TNBMHL 2016 Women’s League champions, were flat-footed in the first two quarters as Blue Warriors mounted heavy pressure to score twice but somehow got their act going right in the fourth quarter to reduce the deficit through Siti Shahidah Saad in the 49th minute via a penalty corner.
The Bandar Penawar sports school, however, dominated the last quarter and had seven penalty corner opportunities but could not make good use of it as Blue Warriors held their fort fully determined to win their first title this season.
Blue Warriors also took home the winner’s purse of RM20,000 while SSTMI pocketed RM10,000 – adding on to their League winnings of RM20,000.
SSTMI paraded seven national team players and Blue Warriors four are scheduled to depart tomorrow for Perth to compete in the Australian Hockey League. Joining the national women’s team in AHL is the men’s senior team and development squad.
With a full force support led by top brasses of the Royal Malaysian Police that included its Director of Management, Datuk Seri Zulkifli Abdullah, and Deputy Director DCP Hajjah Fatimah Abdul Hamid, the Blue Warriors victory today was instantly a soothing balm having finished second in the league behind SSTMI. Both teams played out a 1-1 draw in the two-round league.
“It was a fantastic ending in the league for Blue Warriors this season. The players played their hearts out in the final and deserved this victory. It is a very joyous moment for us,” said Blue Warriors team manager, Insp Nor Aishah Ishak.
