KUALA LUMPUR (16 January 2019): National women’s number one, Goh Jin Wei achieved the biggest win in her fledgling professional career, when she ousted third seed and world number five, Akane Yamaguchi in the opening round of the women’s singles at the Perodua Malaysia Masters 2019 (PMM 2019) held at the Axiata Arena, KL Sports City, Bukit Jalil tonight.The two time world junior champion played a composed game to down the former world number one from Japan, 21-12, 21-14 to progress into the second round tomorrow.
“Whoever, are the main challengers, I am ready to face them. Like the game against Yamaguchi today, I didn’t expect to win as it was a tough match.
“After a year and a half of playing at the senior level, this championship is the best platform to measure my level against the best players in the world,” said Jin Wei during the post-match press conference.
The 19 year old from Bukit Mertajam is on her way to the top of the women’s game, evident from her success in the gold medal winning exploits in the Youth Olympic Games and World Junior Championships last year.
She will meet Zhang Yiman in the next round after the Chinese player halted the progress of qualifier, Yeo Jia Min from Singapore, 21-18, 13-21, 21-16.
National number two women’s pair, Vivian Hoo-Yap Cheng Wen are slowly but surely making their presence felt on the international stage, evident from their progress into the second round.
The 33rd ranked pair in the world, which was formed last September, showed that they have what it takes to go far in the future when they overcame Thai combination, Chavanit Chaladchalam-Phataimas Muenwong, 12-21, 21-12, 21-18 today in their first round match.
Vivian-Cheng Wen will meet qualifier, Yulfira Barkah-Jauza Fadhila Sugiarto from Indonesia in the second round, who went through after a tense encounter against another qualifier, Linda Efler-Isabel Herttrich from Germany, 14-21, 21-19, 21-17.
Meanwhile, Malaysia’s number one men’s singles player, Liew Daren fought back from 2-11 down and saved one game point in the first set to prevail 23-21, 21-13 over eight seed, Tommy Sugiarto from Indonesia in the first round.
It was the world no 31’s first win over Sugiarto in three attempts. The world championship bronze medallist will meet qualifier, Victor Svendsen from Denmark in the second round who was not troubled in the match against Lee Hyun Il from Korea who retired after being down 1-3 in the first set.
