December 31, 2018CYBERJAYA (29 December 2018): Doubles specialist, Goh V Shem got off to a winning start in the SS Purple League 2018/19, contributing points towards Petaling Badminton Club’s 13-7 victory over Bukit Mertajam All Stars Badminton Club (BMASBC) on Day 8 Stage 1 at the Gem In Mall, Cyberjaya today.Petaling BC’s win has pushed them to the top of the table, followed by defending champions Puchong United Badminton Club (PUBC) and last year’s finalist, Kepong Badminton Club (KBC) in third.
V Shem who usually partners Tan Wee Kiong in the national team, was paired with Man Wei Chong and didn’t disappoint with a dominant 3-0 (11-2, 11-6, 11-7) display against team mates, Chua Yue Chern-Sim Fong Hau for an unassailable 9-2 lead.
“This year, Petaling BC looks strong as we have many quality junior players in the ranks. I hope to contribute more good results for Petaling BC in the other matches,” said V Shem.
Opening men’s singles, Chong Yee Han put Petaling BC in the lead, 3-1 (8-11, 11-7, 11-7, 11-6) against Riyanto Subagya.
World number 58, Yulia Yosephine Susanto from Indonesia extended Petaling BC’s lead by defeating national junior, Lim Jing Ning, 3-1 (9-11, 11-9, 11-7, 11-10) in the women’s singles for a 6-2 lead for Petaling BC.
Indonesian-Chinese mixed doubles pair, Agrippina Prima Rahmanto Putera-Jin Yujia spoilt the party for Petaling BC, winning 3-1 (8-11, 11-9, 11-10, 11-10) against Singaporean-Malaysian pair, Terry Hee Yong Kai-Lai Pei Jing to provide some cheer for BMASBC.
National player, Cheam June Wei provided the icing to the cake of an overall dominant display for Petaling BC, winning 3-2 (7-11, 11-8, 2-11, 11-5, 11-9) against Lucas Corvee of France to leave coach, Ismail Saman delighted with his chargers performance.
In a later match featuring two of the bottom teams in the SSPL was won by Serdang Badminton Club (SBC) who defeated Bandar Maharani BC (BMBC) 9-7. This result meant BMBC are the only team without a win so far and stay rooted to the table.
The SS Purple League 2019 features local and international players including Olympic medallists, world champions, former big names and rising stars on the international stage.
Players from the eight teams will compete in three stages in a single round robin format and play-off format for the coveted SS Purple League trophy. Total prize money for this season is RM1,500,000.
The SS Purple League 2019 will run from December 2018 to January 2019 beginning with Stage 1 on 21-24 Dec, 26-30 Dec and 2-6 Jan 2019 to be held at Gem in Mall, Cyberjaya. Stage 2 will be played on 11-13 Jan 2019, also at Gem in Mall, Cyberjaya. The final round will be held on 24-27 Jan 2019 at the Arena of Stars, Resorts World Genting.
