April 3, 2017Lebih 10, 000 Peserta Ambil Bahagian Dalam Great Eastern Viper Arena
April 3, 2017Batu Kawan, Penang (30 March, 2017): The Viper Challenge series, renowned as Asia’s largest obstacle course running event, returned to Malaysia with Great Eastern Life Assurance (Malaysia) Berhad as the title sponsor for the second year with a brand new edition in Penang.
The inaugural edition at Batu Kawan Stadium covered a distance of 7km with 15 obstacles, which were tailored to test the physical and mental fitness, and stamina, of all competitors to their limit. The Great Eastern Viper Arena Penang received great response with over 11,000 tickets sold with almost 3,500 international participants.
The event kicked off at 6pm with the Elite participants making their way through the adrenaline-pumping obstacles before the next group of participants, which consists of the management and staff of Great Eastern Life Assurance and its agents force. Participants were flagged off in waves of 30 minutes until the final wave at 3.30am.
The Great Eastern Viper Arena being the first of five Viper Challenge series in Malaysia, was graced by the presence of the Chief Minister of Penang, YAB Tuan Lim Guan Eng as he flagged off participants of the 8pm wave together with Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Great Eastern Life Assurance (Malaysia) Bhd, YBhg Dato Koh Yaw Hui, General Manager of Malaysia Major Events, Mr. Tony Nagamaiah and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Penang Global Tourism, Mr. Ooi Chok Yan.
Ever since the first edition in 2013, the Viper Challenge supported by Malaysia Major Events, a division of Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB), an agency under the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, Malaysia (MoTAC) has grown immensely popular, and with more and more events being introduced yearly, it’s not surprising that the brand currently now has well over 120,000 enthusiasts that have competed in events locally and internationally.
“We had a high demand for the Viper Challenge to be held here in Penang and as this is our first time here, the support from everyone especially the public has been great. We are continuously innovating and improving the obstacles to continue testing and challenging the ability of the participants. The Viper Challenge is unique as each series pose a different theme and concept,” said Selva Kumar, CEO of Original Bootcamp Sdn Bhd, the brains behind the Viper Challenge.
The event necessitated teamwork, discipline and empathy and while it was not considered a ‘race’ as such, it was vital for participants to work together to overcome all the obstacles before they earn the finisher medal and t-shirt.
Expressing his joy at completing the 15 obstacles and obtaining the finisher medal was 39-year-old, Balaraj Krishnan, a participant from Kulim, Kedah, who was participating for the first time in the Viper Challenge series after being introduced to by his working colleagues.
“I am very glad to have completed all the obstacles today and I also have my 21 other friends to thank for as we were helping each other throughout without leaving anyone behind. It took us 75 minutes to complete the 7km course, however, we enjoyed every single minute of it,” said Balaraj.
The Great Eastern Viper Arena Penang served to be 33-year-old, Steven Ang’s third time participating in the Viper Challenge series as he aims to obtain the necessary pieces and complete the Series Finisher medal.
“I had a good time today with my friends as we reached the finish line together after completing all the obstacles. It was fun but at the same time more challenging than the previous editions of the Viper Challenge and now we are looking forward to the next one in Johor,” said the Penangite, who is a property speaker by profession.
Viper Challenge events have multiple formats catering to the masses as well as an elite few. Participants are required to complete any three of the five events – entry-level (Singapore, Penang and Johor) or mid-level events (Genting Highlands, Shah Alam) before making their way to the final event, the Great Eastern Viper Challenge.
Great Eastern Viper Challenge 2017 is presented by Great Eastern Life as part of their LIVE GREAT Programme, the first integrated health and wellness programme by an insurance company in the region.
Fans need not worry if they missed the Penang edition as the Viper Challenge series next, moves to Medini, Johor in April 2017 and then to Genting Highland on 15 July 2017.
Forget fear, worry about addiction.
