March 20, 2017Kuala Lumpur (18 March, 2017): Defending champions Terengganu breezed past Negeri Sembilan 4-1 in the opening day of the 1Mas-MSN-KPM-Milo Boys National Under-16 Tournament at the Ministry of Education Hockey Stadium in Kuala Lumpur today.
Team captain Muhammad Yusri Jusuh took 14 minutes to give the east coast side the lead via open play whilst Wan Muhammad Ikram Wan Mohd Tamiz (35th) and Ahmad Izzat Zariq Haikal Mazri (40th) increased the score to 3-0 through penalty corners before Yusri returned two minutes later to score the fourth from a field goal.
Aiman Haqim Badrulhisham replied for Negeri Sembilan (41st) in this Group A encounter which also saw Penang making a head start following a 3-0 win over Johor.
In Group B, Perak defeated Malacca 4-2 and Selangor edged Perlis 3-0 while Pahang, amongst the favourites to qualify for the second round from Group C, triumphed 4-1 against Kuala Lumpur.
Sabah, who took a 4-0 lead against Kelantan after just 24 minutes of play, saw its defence crumbled in the second as Kelantan came back to hold the east Malaysians to a 5-5 draw in a Group C tie.
In the women’s competition, defending champions Selangor pulverised Kelantan 7-0 and Sabah defeated Kedah 5-0 in Group A encounters.
Kuala Lumpur also made a triumphant start following 8-0 win over Perak and Johor edged Malacca 3-1 in Group C matches today.
The nine-day event from March 18-26 features 14 states participating in the boys division and 13 states, except for Perlis, competing in the girl’s category.
The top two teams at the end of the preliminary round in the boys and girls categories will advance to Round 2 where the teams are divided into two groups of three teams each. The top ranked teams will move into the March 26 final.
