Kuala Lumpur (18 February, 2017): The National Women’s team will play between 14-16 matches during their tour of Europe next month in preparation for the Hockey Women World League Semi-finals.
Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) president, Dato’ Sri Subahan Kamal, in disclosing this today after the ninth Executive Board meeting held in Kuala Lumpur, said MHC is currently in communication with several European nations such as Germany, Netherlands, Belgium and England.
“We should finalise the details of the tour in two weeks’ time. The team will play against national juniors of Germany and clubs in Holland. There has been invitations from some countries too who are keen to play the Tigresses,” added Dato’ Sri Subahan.
“At the moment we are not sure if the national women’s team is going to play in Belgium or Johannesburg, South Africa in the World League Semi-finals but we are preparing them as early as possible upon completion of the TNBMHL Women League,” he added.
The city of Brussels, Belgium will host the first Women World League Semi-Finals from 21 June – 2 July 2017 with New Zealand, Netherlands, Australia, China, Korea, Belgium and 4 teams from Hockey World League Round 2 joining the fray.
South Africa will host the second Women World League Semi-Finals from 8-23 July 2017. Teams competing here are England, Argentina, United States, Germany, Japan, South Africa and 4 teams from Hockey World League Round 2.
The Malaysian Tigers, coached by Stephen van Huizen, will also depart for Dhaka, Bangladesh on February 28 – two days after the conclusion of the TNB Cup final to compete in the World League Round 2 which is held from March 4-12 at the Maulana Bhasani Hockey Stadium.
“With the tight schedule, the men’s team will arrive in Dhaka on Feb 28 and play a friendly match against China (March 2) before heading straight into the tournament proper,” he said.
“We are confident of making progress to the Men World League Semi-finals from the Dhaka event. On a positive note, 2017 has been a good year for the women’s team and we expect the men to also shine,” he said.
Other matters discussed by the executive board, added Dato’ Sri Subahan, was in relation to increasing MHC’s financial standing in lieu of the various domestic programmes and national teams international assignments in 2017.
“We need to look for more funds to run our activities. There are many domestic tournaments and also international obligations by the national teams,” he observed.
The MHC also feted 80 children from Rumah Kasih Harmoni Paya Jaras (an orphanage home) after the Executive Board meeting today. They were joined in the event by players from the national men and women team as well as members of the EB.
Dato’ Sri Subahan Kamal also presented a cheque for RM3,000 to the orphanage home on behalf of MHC.
